"People contacted me (Kevin Echlin) through the internet to play ukulele and sing, while others, all the way from Brazil played all the other instruments.
I could not pass up the offer, and making this simple connection to someone through music has brought us folks from very far away, closer.

Hope you guys like it!"

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KEVIN ECHLIN FOR ARTWALL ZINE

"I like music because it creates moods, emotions, and worlds either separate or very similar to my own; worlds in which I can really enjoy or relate to the content (or both). Music is almost therapeutic for me, when I hear a good sound in a song I love playing it over again."

1) So far the styles I've tried have been totally inspired by others. The styles really come out of my desires for recording. The recording process is very fun because I get to orchestrate and create either a full sounding band, or do things in a over-dub type of way that I wouldn't be able to do live. Live I usually just use my guitar, or I would bring an accordion, mandolin, and oud.

2) My inspirations are pretty visible as far as musicians go. I'm sure everyone knows that I enjoy Beirut quite a lot. It was funny because when I found Zach's "The joys of losing weight", I was making electronic music in a similar vein, and I felt very compelled to try to orchestrate my own balkan or middle eastern sounding style just because it was so exciting for me that someone was doing what they wanted to successfully and it was so similar to what I was doing. I felt like I could relate to that process.

Some other heavy inspirations: the amount of work that Jonsi from Sigur Ros pumps out; that whole band as well. Bjork has also been a pretty heavy influence on me, and I'm sure some others know that I love Nick Drake, and Fionn Regan. They really inspired me to pick up an acoustic guitar.
Boards of Canada, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Sufjan and Fleet Foxes of course to name only a few. More inspiration probably comes from my desire to just play music because I enjoy it so much.

3) Well I'm graduating from University in April 2012. After that I want to record an acoustic cd that I've been dying to record for years now. The time allotted to do some things I want is very limited. Maybe if I like it enough I'll either give it to some friends or send it away to a small label.

4) Maybe I'll talk about that sort of chronologically. I started playing punk and ska when I was 12 and 13; in a band modeled after maybe a mixture of early Clash and Stiff Little Fingers. After that my friend and I got the computer program fruity loops and made electronic music for some years. When I picked up an acoustic guitar at 16 I got the confidence to play live at my school, and soon after at a local bar.
From then on I discovered the whole crazy video blog phenomenon La Blogotheque. My friend and I bought every instrument possible and started playing folk stylings, gyspy, and some other french influenced stuff. I then bought a better microphone and started recording, putting songs on myspace and putting videos on Youtube. Since then I've been opening for bands from around Canada that stop by my hometown.

5) It was kind of funny and fast. They just sent me a nice message through my Youtube account about a Beirut cover that I did, and asked if we could create a cross-continental band to play Beirut's "Elephant Gun". So I recorded my part singing and playing ukulele, and they gathered some friends to fill the other parts. After that I offered to edit some video but they did a great job, so it was just a waiting period for me. He put it on Youtube and sent me a file copy to post on mine as well. Vinicius Barros was the initial person to get this thing together. He was super nice and fun to work with on it.
